The quiet cost in the pews

Every Sunday, they're opened, sung from, and closed again.

Pew hymnals see twenty or thirty years of weekly use. The spine gives first, at the top and bottom, then the corners wear through to bare board. A full new set can run $1,500 to $9,000, and some editions are out of print for good.

  • Replace the whole set $1,500 to $9,000+
  • Professional rebinding $75+ per book
  • Mend with BookGuard about $3 per book

New pew hymnals list at $14 to $34 each. Rebinding from $75 per book (2026 bindery price lists).

Keep their names in the pews.

Many hymnals carry a bookplate for someone your congregation loved. Mending honors the gift, and the people who still sing from it every week.

Three steps. A few minutes a book.

  1. Cut

One strip of cloth tape per book, cut to the length your plan gives you. Corners come pre-cut.

  2. Wrap

Lay the strip over the spine, fold the ends inside at the top and bottom, and fold a corner over each worn tip.

  3. Press

Smooth it down. The archival adhesive holds for good: no yellowing, no peeling like packing tape.

Cloth tape re-covers the spine. Wings go on the top and bottom of the spine, where it wears first. Corners go on the outside corners, away from the spine. Every ministry pack includes all three.

Made to look like it belongs.

Matte cloth with the color all the way through, so it won't rub off. Pick the shade closest to your covers.

  • Forest Green

  • White

Wings say "Forest Green", corners say "Green": same cloth.

A ministry pack for every church.

Each pack mends a set number of hymnals completely: a new cloth spine, two wings and four corners per book. The bigger the pack, the less you pay per hymnal. Choose your color.

"The burgundy cloth tape for book repair is an exact match to what many refer to as the 'red church hymnal'. The $60+ dollars we spent here saved our church about $500 by not having to purchase new hymnals."

Frequently asked questions

How many do I need?

A full mend uses one strip of cloth tape on the spine, 2 wings (top and bottom of the spine) and 4 corners (the outside corners). Many books only need one or the other; the planner sizes it for you.

How much does one roll do?

A 15-yard roll re-covers about 50 standard pew hymnals (about 10 3/4" a book).

Which width?

Measure the spine cover to cover and add an inch: most pew hymnals take 3", thin songbooks 2", thick pew Bibles 4". The planner picks it for you.

Will it match our hymnals?

Seven matte colors shared by tape, corners and wings: Burgundy, Red, Navy Blue, Black, Forest Green, Brown and White (tape also comes in Tan, Olive and Gray). Navy, burgundy and forest green are the colors churches order most.

Do volunteers need tools?

Just scissors and a ruler for the spine strips. Corners and wings come pre-cut.

Will it work on Bibles and missals?

On any hardcover. For softcover missalettes, use cloth tape on the spine.

Can we pay with a purchase order?

Yes. Purchase orders are accepted; check out with PO or call us.

What if it isn't right?

Unused items can be returned within 30 days.

Can you make custom sizes?

Yes, for larger orders, oversized altar Bibles or unusual hymnals. Send your plan for a quote.
